(Un)confined is a new generative landscape inspired by the artist’s visit to the V&A, where curators introduced him to the museum’s collection. Struck by the work of pioneering generative artist Harold Cohen, Mapan responded with a composition of opaque, boldly outlined forms scattered across the surface, exploring a dialogue between shape, space and colour. The work marks the first time he has shown this kind of graphic style publicly, signalling a new direction in his practice.
"Code is not only something I use on computers. It's just a way of thinking."
Presented across both physical and digital forms, the project unfolds as a connected exploration of a single generative system and its constraints. The digital generative work, Confined, begins the narrative within an enclosed space, where animated forms push against the limits of their environment. Its companion print, (Un)confined, extends this story as those same forms appear to escape beyond the frame into an open landscape. Together, the works invert conventional expectations of each medium, with the digital composition embracing a more expressive visual language while the silkscreen print resolves into bold, graphic precision.
