Fluid vignettes make dreams of the everyday

“Putting the world on canvas is the ultimate freedom for me.”

Alice Brasser uses soft, liquid brushstrokes to capture scenes from her own life. Like the post-impressionists Vincent van Gogh and Pierre Bonard, Brasser is disinterested by accuracy.  She blurs her surroundings with her imagination. Moments experienced with friends and family drift by as contemplative interiors and soothing landscapes. In Swim (2022), Brasser’s first viral work, a figure disappears into the hues of the water surrounding them, floating into the unknown.

Brasser considers her mysterious dreamscapes the result of “seeking in paint, exploring the boundaries of painting by compressing space”. When the covid-19 pandemic disrupted conventional routes to see and discover art, she was challenged to play with her paintings’ dimensions. A series of very small works proved popular with Brasser's community of fans and collectors online. In moments of isolation, her compact canvases provided a place to find comfort.
