Bio
Zeng Fanzhi is a painter whose visually and historically complex work reflects a bold fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Raised in one of China's most culturally dynamic cities, he graduated from the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 1991, where he was inspired by China's '85 New Wave movement and drew deeply from German Expressionism and French Romanticism, particularly the expressive gestures of Max Beckmann, Willem de Kooning, and Edvard Munch. Rather than following the Social Realism of his training, Zeng turned to the textures of daily life, producing his landmark Hospital (1991–92) and Meat (1992–94) series, visceral works in which the skin of his subjects is rendered in fleshy pinks, reflecting his enduring concern for human fragility and existence.
