Bio
Born in Wuhan, Zeng Fanzhi is a painter whose work is known for both technical skill and emotional resonance. During his studies at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, he immersed himself in the Chinese New Wave movement and explored European Expressionism, graduating in 1991 and rapidly gaining attention for his two landmark series; Hospital Triptychs and Meat. The works used raw, psychologically charged imagery to evoke vulnerability, identity, and the human condition.
Later in the 90s, Fanzhi created the celebrated Mask series, in which exaggerated masks become symbols of social performance and alienation in response to the profound social changes affecting China at the time.
In the decades since then, Fanzhi has expanded beyond portraiture, finding inspiration in Chinese artistic traditions while pursuing increasingly abstract forms. His landscapes and large-scale compositions fuse expressive brushwork with layered structures, reflecting an ongoing interest in the relationship between perception, memory and nature.
