Backside works. is a Fukuoka-based artist whose paintings place a recurring heroine at the centre of a world built from Japanese subculture, street vernacular and quiet wit. Working anonymously, the artist foregrounds the audience as the real subject: the heroine exists not as self-portrait but as a vessel for shared experience, depicting ordinary life with a flatness and calm drawn directly from the visual language of animation. Techniques span acrylic, silkscreen, spray paint, UV ink and collage, reflecting a practice rooted equally in fine art and the looser traditions of graffiti and print culture. Active since 2017, the work sits in natural dialogue with the image-making of Yoshitomo Nara and the pop sensibility of Kaws, while remaining distinctly its own. The artist has collaborated with Levi's, Converse, Weekly Shonen Jump and Sanrio, and is exclusively represented by SH Gallery. Recent exhibitions include a solo show in Seoul and participation in Kiaf Seoul, with work shown internationally across Asia and beyond.
