Ai Weiwei brings his sharpest words on art, freedom and power to a new edition series, Weiwei-isms.
The title of this piece comes from the artist’s 2013 book of short, pointed statements, edited by Larry Warsh, which brings together selected quotes from Weiwei’s writing, interviews and social media. Here, the phrase "Liberty is about the fight" appears in a homage to Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa (c. 1831), continuing Ai's ongoing dialogue with art history. The image is composed of toy brick pixelated blocks, a visual motif closely tied to his activism and advocacy for free speech.
Created in close collaboration with the artist at our London print house, Make-Ready, this 31-layer limited edition print of 100 is finished with high-gloss spot varnish to enhance the texture. Each print is signed by the artist.
