Sun-drenched and effortlessly glamorous, Dada Khanyisa reconfigures an archetypal holiday snapshot.

In a location defined only by pale blue ocean and burnt orange sky, the artist’s subject shelters her face from the sun. Partially-abstracted shapes and graphic outlines present a modern take on Cubist sensibilities – a common stylistic throughout Khanyisa’s paintings and sculptures.

The delicate design of the woman’s floral tattoo has been hand-finished by the artist in oil-based pencil, making each print unique.

Framing

Prints can be ordered float-mounted in a matte white wooden frame, fitted with UV plexiglass for protection.

Medium

Hand-pulled, 9 colour silkscreen print on 100% cotton, 250gsm BFK Rives archival paper, hand-finished by the artist with oil-based Lyra Polycolor pencils.

Dada Khanyisa1 collaborationDada Khanyisa is fascinated by the bits of life that are often thought of as boring. They create vibrant 3D portraits that show figures in intimate settings – interacting or arguing, alone and together. Likewise, Khanyisa makes their art out of materials we use on a daily basis. Glass, plastic, fabric and wood are all regular features. The artist then layers them together using collage. They describe their process as ‘nahanjani’. In Zulu, this means ‘by whatever means’. “The work I produce is about the Black experience”, they say – a form of social commentary on day-to-day experience.
