A print by José Parlá thrums with his expansive vision of America.

The American Mindscape will appear in an upcoming exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum in Miami. To mark José's return to the city where he was born, we’ve transformed the cacophonous painting into a limited edition print.

The painting itself began in 2021, when José was recovering from a four month coma and protests were erupting in Cuba. Layer upon layer of abstract marks and script embody entangled feelings of hope and anger, and represent the millions who since 1959 have joined Cuba’s diaspora. Extrapolating, José also reflects on the entire American continent, and the countless stories that connect its inhabitants in pursuit of freedom – asking what it really means to be American.

“This painting taps into a broader narrative, one that extends beyond Cuba and the United States to the complex histories and migrations that shape our identities across this vast continent. It is a story familiar to many of our parents and the generations before us.”

José Parlá5 collaborationsJosé Parlá doesn’t paint, he dances. “My type of meditation is listening to music. I move to it, and eventually it translates into the movement that happens in the painting”. In the studio, he leaps, jumps and climbs across the canvas with his brush. The results are magnificently abstract and burst with kinetic energy. Parlá's passion for music and dance harks back to his childhood. When he was growing up in 1980s-Miami, music was a unifying force. Hip-hop, in particular, brought communities together to dance and hang out – and Parlá aims to do the same with his art.
