A serene portrait by Danielle Mckinney ponders the rhythms of metamorphosis.

Shelter depicts a woman alone with her daydreams. Cocooned in her coat, she is visited by a Monarch butterfly which rests at the tip of her finger beyond her gaze. Butterflies often appear in Mckinney’s work to signal transformation and cyclical rhythms, while the subject’s red fingernails – another signature – symbolise smaller, everyday changes. Shelter invites us to reflect on our own moments of transformation and the quiet beauty found in contemplative solitude.

The edition meticulously translates the rich colours of one of Mckinney’s first oil paintings into print. Each is finished with deckled edges and flashes of gold leaf, applied by hand to the wings of the butterfly.
