Our latest collaboration with Ferrari Sheppard, Iris, transforms his original 2022 oil painting of the same name into a shimmering limited edition silkscreen and digital print.

In Iris, Ferrari employs his signature gestural style to depict a solitary figure seated in a field of fluorescent blooms – "a place of her choosing, where she truly belongs". Inspired by the timeless enigma of the Mona Lisa, the artist wanted the portrait to be "contemplative, playful, and enigmatic", inviting the viewer to interpret her emotions for themselves.

To create the edition, printers at Make-Ready translated the luminosity of the figure's blouse (originally painted with 24K gold leaf) by using metallic inks and gold silkscreen layers, achieving a radiant, gilded effect in the print.

I selected Iris for this print edition because it embodies the antithesis of the current political climate in the United States. In a society regressing to a time when individuals who resemble Iris lacked agency, I present the exact opposite – a celebration of autonomy and strength.

Ferrari Sheppard3 collaborationsFor American artist Ferrari Sheppard, painting is “100% spiritual”. The studio is his refuge and when he paints it often feels like “some greater energy is creating the work”. Growing up in Chicago in the 1990s, Ferrari was a self-confessed “art geek”. When it came to college, he gained a place at the prestigious Fine Art Institute of Chicago. However, the overly-conceptual BA programme ended up pushing Ferrari away from painting, and after he graduated in 2004, he started his career as a writer, photographer and music producer. In 2016, Ferrari returned to his “true purpose” in visual art, and began developing his layered, deeply expressive portraits with acrylic, charcoal and 24-karat gold leaf. His audacious signature style garnered much attention in the art world, and almost a decade later he is firmly cemented as a leading figure in contemporary art.
