Mark Whalen’s greyscale character looms from a soft pink haze of morning light.
Early Light renders Whalen’s sculptural practice in the form of a varnish-sealed print. The character’s donut-shaped mouth is agape, one eye is closed while the other wanders, and liquid droplets bead down their long, oval face. Chrome drop appliqué drip down the surface of the print, highlighting curves and exaggerated facial features, adding to the illusion of three-dimensionality created by carefully blended shading.
Typically portraying a single figure at a time, Whalen’s works represent the range of human emotion – focusing on conveying feelings rather than individual beings.
