Texture, colour, form and function coalesce in a series of unique ceramics by Maxwell Mustardo.
Pottery is a collection of original sculptures with bulbous shapes, glazed in a variety of lurid hues. Mustardo moulds everyday ceramic vessels – mugs, amphora, teapots – into voluptuous forms that look ready to come to life. Having been coated with glaze and fired in the kiln, each sculpture is surfaced with dozens of layers of PVC rubber, which slowly builds up to create a fuzzy surface. The result is a finish so matte that the sculptures could be mistaken for digitally-rendered objects.
In a constant cycle of experimentation and repetition, Mustardo reinvents sculptural archetypes while simultaneously continuing ceramic traditions.
