Portrait of dazzle #150-P

€800

Edition of 5080.0 (H) × 80.0 (W) cmShipping est. 2 weeks

Exuding mystery and glamour, Portrait of dazzle #150-P foregrounds the power of a gaze.

Based on an original work, the print edition sets Matsuyama’s feminine subject against a bold red backdrop, accentuating her sharp silhouette. Disguised by stripes and spots, a pair of deadpan eyes are the only discernible feature, confronting the viewer from underneath a low fringe. Matsuyama’s Portrait of dazzle series explores notions of camouflage. The name and patterns are derived from battleship designs during World War 1, when 'dazzle camouflage' made it difficult to ascertain whether a target was close by or far away. This motif first appeared in an installation by Matsuyama from 2016, and has since featured prominently throughout his practice.

Behind the scenes

artist Shigeki Matsuyama wearing a black cap and painting a greyscale eye

Shigeki Matsuyama1 collaborationThe word ‘dazzle’ appears in many of Shigeki Matsuyama’s titles. And his work is just that, dazzling. Bold black and white stripes camouflage artworks in a range of mediums. Whether it’s a painted portrait or an immersive installation, there’s always stripes. Inspiration comes from everyday experiences. “When I'm creating, I often take inspiration from the things around me – things like a sense of unease and distrust towards media like the Internet and TV.” In particular, Matsuyama is interested in how today’s media distorts self-image. “The theme that runs throughout my works is that of ‘modern people’", he says.
