For me, there really is no difference between the personal and the political. It all blends, it's all the same.

Carrie Mae Weems selects three works from her seminal Kitchen Table Series.
In 1990, Carrie Mae Weems took 20 black-and-white images at her kitchen table, a traditionally female space that has not been celebrated enough in art. The overhead bulb sets the stage in each photograph, where a host of intimate domestic scenes and social dynamics unfold.
For Kitchen Table Triptych, the artist carefully selected 3 images from the original series, each exploring a different aspect of social relationships: romance, self and family.
The triptych opens with Untitled (Man & Mirror), a staged photograph of love and desire, followed by Untitled (Woman & Phone), which captures the vulnerability and empowerment of solitude. Finally, Untitled (Woman Brushing Hair) concludes the trio with a loving ode to the intimacy and imperfections of family and motherhood.
Telling intimate stories of love and power, Kitchen Table Triptych captures the enduring legacy of this historic series and Carrie’s pioneering career.
