Glenn Brown weaves a tapestry of references in this new limited edition print.

Renowned for transforming art historical and pop cultural imagery into obsessively detailed, often grotesque paintings, the British artist produces only a handful of works each year. For this edition, he reimagines his original oil painting Doggerland (2022–24) – itself rooted in two 16th-century studies: Andrea del Sarto’s Study of the Head of a Young Woman (1523) and Raphael’s Study for the Disciple at the Extreme Left of The Transfiguration (c. 1519–20).

In A Sailor on the Bed, Brown subtly distorts colour and proportion from Doggerland, while introducing a bold black bar at the image’s base – homage to a vintage Star Wars poster. Created in close collaboration with our master printmakers at Make-Ready, the edition has been meticulously crafted as a wholly new creation in its own right.

I would find it impossible to make a painting without referencing other artists. I just think it would be meaningless.
