Ai Weiwei raises his middle finger once again in a silkscreen tondo.
In Circle in Blue, Weiwei’s iconic gesture radiates outwards in a continuous composition. Weiwei started using the motif of the middle finger in 1995 when taking photos for his series Study of Perspective. In the series, Weiwei stuck up his middle finger to historic landmarks in an act of defiance that asserts our collective right to form, hold and express individual beliefs. For the artist, the power of a simple gesture like this is that anyone can make it.
The artwork is printed in 11 layers at Make-Ready in London. Its blue and white palette, lustrous finish and circular form call to mind Weiwei’s porcelain sculptures which themselves reference ancient Chinese ceramics from the Yuan and Ming dynasties.
