In Eternal Reflections (Teal), Amir H. Fallah entwines storybook motifs with luscious flora to create a series of otherworldly portals.

The edition transposes one of the artist’s original tondos onto a coloured plexiglass mirror. Each onlooker becomes an active participant in the artwork as their reflection fills the central void. “I'm interested in turning the history of portraiture on its head and trying to create an alternative way to describe someone.”

References to a wealth of influences – from Persian miniatures to children’s book illustrations – mingle with flowers from diverse ecosystems. The combination of familiar and ‘other’ serves as a metaphor for migration, and the ability of diasporic populations to thrive in new contexts.

The edition is also available in pink, purple and yellow.

Amir H. Fallah paints portraits of identity in all its multiplicitous glory. He starts by photographing people at home, among their belongings. Or as he puts it: “personal mementos, historical heirlooms and the mundane debris of life.” While the sitters do sometimes feature, Fallah favours their belongings and memories. Elements from the photoshoots are then mixed with a wealth of references from East and West. There are nods to Persian miniatures, historical maps, illuminated manuscripts, science-fiction and cartoons. Using acrylic paints, he slowly builds the busy, collage-esque compositions. Together, these amass into vibrant roadmaps of identity.
