Swedish duo Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg animate fantastical forays of shame and desire.

The Advantage, a series of 25, touches on recurring themes from Djurberg and Berg’s practice: metamorphosis, guilt and deceit. Treacherous yet disarmingly hopeful, the crocodile pursues an upper hand, using a wig as its disguise. In the artists’ words, the series “takes something considered ugly and adds something more, which turns out not beautiful either, and then finds the beauty (and sweetness) in the innocence of that act.”

The work is drawn from a series of animations and sculptures titled Only for the wicked, scheduled to premier in Lyon, France, in 2022.

Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg standing outdoors together

Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg1 collaborationIn fabulously weird animations, Djurberg and Berg balance child-like imagination with grotesque violence to explore dark facets of human psychology and animalistic desire. Djurberg creates the animations and installations, handcrafting characters and backdrops from materials such as clay, plasticine, fabric, wire and paint. Berg then scores technopop-come-classical soundtracks to amplify the complex emotional charge of the films’ disorientating storylines. Image and sound coalesce in playful-yet-unnerving artworks which envelop their viewers in strangely seductive environments. Inspired by folklore traditions in their native Sweden, the works riff on famous fairytales and cinematic tropes to giddily bizarre effect.

Absolutely gorgeous! I have admired Danielle McKinney's work and Shelter is exceptionally beautiful. The colors, the texture - I was delighted when I opened the box. The frame and floating presentation is also perfectly matched to the beauty of the piece. Also, well done on the shipping - it came thoroughly protected. Thank you!
