This new limited edition vase sculpture sees Ai Weiwei reimagine one of his most iconic mediums.

Weiwei has long engaged with ancient Chinese pottery as a means of cultural and political critique – most famously in his 1995 work Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, in which he let a 2,000-year-old ceremonial vase crash to the floor. Since then, the object has become a prominent and recurring medium in the artist's prolific oeuvre, from branding ancient pots with consumerist symbols like the Coca-Cola logo, to dripping Neolithic objects in household paint. Coloured Vase (Red) continues Weiwei's rich ceramic legacy, blending ancient craft and modern-day iconography to question how cultural value is both constructed and commodified.

This sculpture edition is produced using a highly skilled metal spinning process. This is our second vase edition with Ai Weiwei, following Glass Vase released in 2023.

Behind the scenes

Each 'Coloured Vase' sculpture is handcrafted using a highly skilled, artisanal metal-spinning process.

Ai Weiwei27 collaborationsAi Weiwei is unafraid to speak truth to power. He’s one of the most famous living artists today – a testament to the breadth and vision of his practice. Effortlessly, he moves between different media, from sculpture and architecture to performance and documentary film. His work is often monumental in scale and is driven by a hunger for truth and justice. In 2008, for example, Ai spent many months collecting the names of over 5000 children who lost their lives in the Sichuan earthquake. This unflinching dedication to human rights saw him detained by the Chinese government for 81 days in 2011, accused of ‘subverting the state.’
