An ornate print by Harmonia Rosales celebrates an epic tale of Yoruba deities.

Eve and the Orishas is based on the Baroque painting Consequences of War (1628) by Peter Paul Rubens. However, in this rendition, the artist depicts Yoruba deities (Orishas) and the biblical figure of Eve defending their own cultural identities in the face of European attempts to entrap them in Western Christian narratives. An allegory for the diasporic Yoruba religion, Lucumí, also called Santería, this painting is a prime example of the Cuban-American painter's renowned skill for re-imagining classical European art through an Afrocentric lens.

This limited edition archival pigment print has been carefully crafted by our artisan printmakers at Make-Ready with a matte varnish to emulate the finish of the original work, painted in 2021.

I allowed the painting to guide me – it’s a very spiritual process, and I think of myself as a vessel for the Orishas as they move through me.
